A Rider’s Wishlist: James Zeleznik’s Guide to Motorcycle Rides in BC

After recently purchasing a brand new Harley Davidson Motorcycle, James Zeleznik feels drawn to the open road. With summer fast approaching, there is no better time than now to hit the highway and spend some quality one-on-one time with your motorcycle. Today, James shares some route ideas he is planning on traveling in the near future. As a long time resident of West Kelowna, James is a perfect reference if you are looking for motorcycle rides in BC. All three rides discussed contain breath taking scenery of British Colombia, along with its neighbouring Province, Territory, and States.

Tofino

I can’t think of a better way to see the West Coast of BC then to take a drive to the surfing village of Tofino. As a final resting spot on my ride through Vancouver Island, I cannot wait to visit the mammoth beaches of this small town. I’ll take the ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Nanimo, and then crossing the Island will only take around 3 hours. The road is not straight. There are numerous small twists and turns making for a fun ride, and all this while being surrounded by some of the most densest forests imaginable. The trip is short, but has to be one of the most scenic motorcycle rides in BC that you’ll find. To see more about Tofino, I recommend checking the Tourism Tofino Webpage here.

Northern BC/Alaska

Driving to Anchorage, Alaska, allows me to see many parts of Western Canada like, Alberta, Northern BC, and the Yukon. It’s hard for me to imagine any better way to see what landscapes Northern BC has to offer than to take a trip to Anchorage. Following the route through Alberta allows me to ride through Jasper National Park. I believe this site to be worth seeing for the extra 300 kilometres you’ll be driving, then if you’d have gone straight through BC. If you need more convincing check out the Parks Canada Webpage on Jasper Park here. In total, the trip clocks in at about 3600 kilometres. I’m definitely planning on taking a week or more, so I have the opportunity to camp along the way.

Seattle

Riding my bike south towards Seattle, Washington, would be an absolute joy to experience one sunny day. Unfortunately, the beginning of this trip bares striking resemblance to the ride out to Tofino, however, as soon as I start heading south I am in for a unique experience. The real draw for me on this trip is the I-5 S, which I get on in Bellingham, Washington. With high traffic and speeds, I think it’ll be a pretty intense interstate highway to ride. Seattle only takes a few hours, so the city may just end up being one stop on a longer trip through the West Coast of the United States. But for now I’ll just keep my sites to Seattle, and if you want to check out more on the city I suggest visiting here.

Having such a range of inviting places to visit that surround us here in British Columbia really makes me appreciate where I live. It’s easy to search out motorcycle rides in BC, you can literally just drive anywhere in the Province. However, exploring the neighbouring areas only enriches my love for my location. I take motorcycle riding as a thrill. I believe riding harnesses a great deal of focus and adrenaline. With that comes a heightened sense of awareness to ones surroundings. The memories I have from riding my motorcycle are vivid. Being able to recall the places I’ve seen with a better sense of clarity is why I feel the motorcycle to be a distinguished form of travel.
