Fly fishing is a wicked sport to get involved in. B.C. has some amazing lakes that are fly only lakes with stunning fish. Hatheume Lake is a prime example of a trophy fish lake in B.C., where you can catch rainbow trout. I enjoy fly fishing because it is peaceful and rewarding. There is nothing like pulling a fish from the water that you can cook up for dinner or stock the freezer with.
For an intense level of excitement try a dry fly on top or for those monster fish try a fly that sinks down deep. Casting a fly rod is an art, it is difficult to master. If you are just starting out, try using a pencil to figure out your grip and how to stand first. Once you figure it out, the early mornings on the water are serene.
The right gear in your tackle box is important. For any questions I usually visit the knowledgeable staff at Trout Waters Fly and Tackle in Kelowna. Once you have all your gear choosing a lake can be intimidating. There are hundreds of lakes in B.C. to fish, some are stocked by Fish and Games. Make sure you check the fishing regulations for the lake you are looking at before starting out and check to make sure you have a valid fishing license. A great way to discover all our lakes is the Backroads Mapbooks.
Fly fishing is a great sport if you want to go solo, but it is also a great way to spend time with other fishermen or women. Time spent at the lake is never wasted time. I suggest trying it out or getting more involved if you are looking for a great way to spend some of your down time.
