Yes, there is a very real chance of getting struck by lightning in Canada. However, it is a very small chance and it usually occurs under certain circumstances. Thunderstorms are amazing to watch when they light up the sky and make you chest rattle but there are things you definitely shouldn’t do while they are happening. A lot of people are unaware of the dangers of getting hit by lightning.
There are approximately 10 deaths per year in all of Canada from lightning related incidents and up to 164 injuries related to lightning. The circumstances most common for these incidents are camping/hiking, boating, work and golf. Soccer and baseball are the most common sports for lightning incidents with multiple people affected. The majority of people involved were out in the open or hiding under trees. The usual victim are men under 45 who are participating in outdoor activities in Ontario. The Canadian environment website will back up all this information .
I enjoy all of these activities on a regular basis and will continue to do so, but if you are worried you can check out this website and it will tell you the most dangerous place to be in the next 10 minutes where a possibility of getting hit by lightning is high. So, if you are in a storm don’t golf, hide under trees or be on a boat.
