Under the Homeowner Protection Act, as a general contractor I must maintain a qualified status on my residential builder license. What that means is in order to keep building residential buildings in B.C. I must satisfy the requirements for assessment through B.C. Housing. They require courses to be taken through formal and informal learning and on-the-job learning. You must provide proof of courses and keep proof for up to three years after completion.
Continuing Professional Development is based on points that you receive by completing courses, seminars and active management of new homes. This license needs to be renewed every year to keep updated on changes to every aspect of building regulations, so the courses and training must be completed regularly. There is an education registry where you can find courses to take and how many points they are worth.
To apply for a license you need to demonstrate knowledge in 7 core areas and be accepted by a warranty insurance provider. Once you are qualified you can stay that way by keeping your license renewed, which saves you from having to re-apply for a license. Anyone building a new home in B.C. must have a license with few exemptions. This program should give new homeowners piece of mind that their home is being constructed properly according to the building code.
